Hiking the Alta Via Highlights in 5 Days: What to Expect
The Alta Via 1 is a renowned long-distance trekking route in the Italian Dolomites that offers a thrilling adventure for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Read on to find out more about what you can expect when embarking on this trek.
Alta Via 1 Has Spectacular Scenery
Our Alta Via 1 guided tour leads you through some of the most stunning alpine landscapes in the world. You'll encounter the rugged peaks, lush meadows, pristine lakes, and dramatic rock formations that make the Dolomites a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Alta Via Tour Has Challenging Terrain
Alta Via 1 includes challenging ascents and descents, rocky trails, and high-altitude passes. The trails can be quite rugged, with sections that are both rocky and exposed to the elements. Hikers should be prepared for uneven footing and occasional steep climbs, making this route significantly more challenging compared to more popular hikes like the TMB. The rougher terrain demands extra caution and physical readiness, especially in exposed areas where weather conditions can change rapidly.
Stay in Traditional Mountain Huts
When hiking the Dolomites Alta Via 1 with us, you will stay in a series of well-maintained mountain huts (rifugios) where you can rest, eat, and sleep. These huts provide a unique opportunity to experience the local culture and cuisine. Rifugios like Averau, Lagazuoi, and Nuvolau offer warm hospitality, hearty food, and epic sunset views.
An Alta Via 1 Guided Tour with Cultural Immersion
In addition to the natural beauty, the trek also introduces you to charming Italian mountain villages and a rich cultural heritage. Open-air war museums near Cinque Torri and Lagazuoi feature restored tunnels, trenches, and wartime paths.
Overall, the Alta Via 1 is an unforgettable adventure that combines the thrill of challenging trekking with the beauty of the Dolomites and the cultural richness of the region. Whether you're an experienced hiker or a newcomer to alpine exploration, this trek offers a unique and rewarding experience amidst some of Europe's most awe-inspiring landscapes.

5 stars for the Adventure Base team! We are so pleased with our self-guided 9-day Tour du Mont Blanc trek through Adventure Base. The company had clear communication with us the whole way- from making our itinerary, checking in before with left the US, checking in once we got to Chamonix, and then while we were on the trail as well. They helped us chose a different route mid hike, making us feel safe and supported. They also did a lot of small things that went a long way- holding our luggage + dropping it off at our hotel to be ready for us once we were done hiking, providing us with digital + paper maps, a mini trail first aid kit and buffs. We are so thankful to have used them!
We had an amazing experience planning the TMB with Adventure Base. Everything went well before and during our trip. Great support from their side.
We did the TMB with adventure base- family with 2 teenagers. We honestly could not have asked for a better organised self guided tour- the accommodation, bag transfers, food and the communication by Adventure base were amazing. Only trumped by Mother Nature- what a beautiful and bucket list walk. Olly, Beth and Virginia were superb and we highly recommend this tour company.
Booked our 11 day self guided tour du mont blanc trek with adventure base who were great from the outset. From prior to booking in answering all of our questions, keeping us informed throughout the booking process all the way through to being readily available to answer any questions and provide alternative gpx and information on varient routes we wanted to take. Incredible team. Thank you

Dolomites Alta Via 1 Guided Tour Itinerary
Whilst we will try and stick to the tried and tested itinerary below, availability in some of the locations may not always be what we hope for. In this instance, we will provide a suitable alternative and make sure you're aware of any changes.
-
Day 1
Arrive in Cortina
We highly recommend planning your inbound travel so that you arrive in Cortina by early afternoon. This is especially important if you need to buy any last minute trekking equipment from any local shops. You’ll need time to collect this before the evening briefing, which is essential for a smooth start to your adventure. There is limited time the following morning to buy any items as you will be departing for the mountains straight after breakfast.
You will meet with your guide for a briefing in the evening at approximately 18:00 to go through the plan for the week as well as the current weather and mountain conditions. Here you will have a chance to go through your kit under the experienced eye of your guide and can ask any questions that you may have. There is a group dinner included which will follow the briefing and then it's time for a good night sleep! -
Day 2:
Cortina - Lago di Braies - Rifugio Sennes
We start the day with a short transfer from the accommodation to the start point of the trek at Lago di Braies. The Alta Via 1 Trek begins at the stunning Lago di Braies, a pristine alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks and lush forests. This iconic starting point sets the tone for the adventure ahead, offering an opportunity for trekkers to take in the breathtaking beauty of the Dolomites. The initial stretch of the trek is relatively gentle, winding through picturesque woodlands and alongside the crystal-clear waters of the lake. As you progress, you'll gradually gain elevation, preparing you for the more challenging terrain that lies ahead. After a few hours of hiking, you'll reach Rifugio Biella. This cozy refuge is nestled amidst the rugged mountains and provides a warm welcome to weary trekkers. You will continue on descending down to the modern Rifugio Sennes where you will stay for your first night in the mountains. The transition from the serene shores of Lago di Braies to the mountainous terrain around Rifugio Sennes offers a taste of the diversity and beauty that the Alta Via 1 promises. It's an ideal introduction to the trek, combining natural wonders with a comfortable mountain hut experience, setting the stage for the exciting days of adventure that lie ahead.

On Day 2 you continue your journey along the Alta Via 1, departing from the scenic Rifugio Sennes. The trail initially leads you through pristine meadows and rolling alpine hills. As you progress, the path becomes a little more challenging, taking you through rocky sections and high mountain passes. One of the highlights of this segment is the opportunity to visit Lago di Limo, a tranquil alpine lake surrounded by rugged peaks. Rifugio Fanes, your destination for the night, is nestled in a picturesque valley surrounded by towering cliffs and lush alpine meadows. Here you will be greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and will savour delicious mountain cuisine.

Day 4:
Rifugio Fannes - Rifugio Lagazuoi
Today you will hike to Rifugio Lagazuoi. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through alpine meadows, but as you progress you may traverse rocky terrain as the path gradually leads you higher into the mountains. One of the most standout features of this section is the opportunity to explore the Lagazuoi Tunnels, a network of World War I tunnels carved into the mountainside. These historical tunnels provide a fascinating glimpse into the region's past and offer panoramic viewpoints from their entrances. As you approach Rifugio Lagazuoi, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the iconic Cinque Torri rock formation. Rifugio Lagazuoi is perched on a ridge, providing a commanding view of the Dolomites. It's a perfect place to rest, enjoy a meal, and soak in the scenery.

As you progress, the terrain becomes more varied, taking you through rocky paths and alpine meadows. You will hike alongside the iconic towering limestone pinnacles Cinque Torri (Five Towers). You'll encounter the iconic Averau and Nuvolau peaks, which are known for their striking profiles against the sky. One of Rifugio Averau or Nuvolau will your destination for the night, perched on a ridge and offering trekkers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, inviting you to relax, savour delicious mountain cuisine, and share stories with fellow trekkers.

Along the way, you’ll walk through one of the best-preserved open-air WWI museum sites in the Dolomites. Here, trenches, tunnels, and shelters tell the powerful story of the mountain warfare that once took place in this region. It's a rare opportunity to walk through history, surrounded by sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. From Cinque Torri, the trail winds down through alpine meadows and forested paths, offering constant views of the Ampezzo Valley. The descent into Cortina d’Ampezzo, a charming mountain town known as the “Queen of the Dolomites,” wraps up the trek in style.
