WHAT TO EXPECT

HERE'S YOUR ITINERARY

Whilst you will try and stick to the tried and tested itinerary below, availability in some of the locations may not always be available. In this instance we will provide a suitable alternative and make sure you're aware of any changes.
You can check out the full itinerary here.

Keep in mind: The moving times shown don’t account for breaks. Add 1–2 hours each day for a more accurate total trail time.

  • Day 1:
Lago di Braies - Rifugio Biella

Start your adventure at the stunning Lago di Braies, where the sparkling waters set the scene for an unforgettable hike. The trail gradually climbs through a mix of open scree and shady woodland, leading up to the Forcella Sora Forno pass at 2,389 m. Just beyond the pass, Rifugio Biella (Seekofelhütte) offers a well-earned rest with breathtaking mountain views.

Some parts of the trail are exposed, but metal handrails provide extra safety. Keep in mind that day one can feel surprisingly challenging—your legs are just getting used to all the walking, and with the sun beating down in spots without shade, it’s easy to tire.

    Approximate time and distances:
    6km / 1000m up / 100m down / 3 hours trekking
    4m / 3300ft up / 300ft down / 3 hours trekking

  • Day 2:
    Rifugio Biella - Rifugio Fanes

From Rifugio Biella, the route continues along a scenic 4x4 track. The path climbs gently at first, then descends steeply towards Rifugio Sennes.

From Rifugio Sennes, the trail continues along gentle tracks through the valley, passing Rifugio Fodara Vedla and Rifugio Pederü. Along the way, you’ll cross a stream, hike past Lago Piciodel, and move through open farmland before entering the woods for a steady climb. The route eventually leads to Rifugio Fanes, your destination for the night.

    Approximate time and distances:
    13kms / 700m up / 1000m down / 4 hours trekking
    8m / 2300ft up / 3300ft down / 4 hours trekking

  • Day 3:
    Rifugio Fanes - Rifugio Lagazuoi

Leaving Rifugio Fanes, the trail climbs steadily onto a wide plateau and continues across open meadows toward Ütia de Gran Fanes. From here, the route stays mostly level before reaching the junction where hikers can choose between the main trail and an easier variant that passes Rifugio Scotoni. The variant via Rifugio Scotoni offers a more gradual route that is less exposed and a good choice in bad weather.

The main route is one of the tougher sections of the Alta Via 1. The climb to Forcella del Lago at 2,486 m is steep, with short rocky sections, and the descent to Lago Lagazuoi is narrow and loose underfoot, requiring caution. After the lake, the trail climbs again to Forcella Lagazuoi before ascending in a series of zigzags to Rifugio Lagazuoi.

    Approximate time and distances:
    12kms / 1000m up / 400m down / 5 hours trekking
    8m / 3300ft up / 1300 ft down / 5 hours trekking

  • Day 4:
    Rifugio Lagazuoi - Rifugio Averau

Today you have a few options for the descent. You can hike down to Passo Falzarego on the trail, explore the historic World War I Tunnels, or take the gondola down from Lagazuoi.

For those looking for something more adventurous, the World War I Tunnels offer a memorable and historic descent. The route passes through hand-carved wartime tunnels used by Italian soldiers during the war. It’s steep and uneven underfoot, and sections can be dark, wet, and slippery—so a headlamp, gloves, and a helmet are recommended. Metal handrails line much of the route, and interpretive signs along the way share the history of the area. The tunnels eventually rejoin the main trail leading down to Passo Falzarego.

If hiking down on foot, follow the zigzags of the main path back to Forcella Lagazuoi, then continue to Forcella Travenanzes. From there, descend along path 402 to Passo Falzarego.

From Passo Falzarego, the trail climbs steadily toward Lago Limedes before continuing over steeper, rockier ground to Forcella Averau. The route then traverses beneath the impressive Averau massif, leading to Forcella Nuvolau and Rifugio Averau. Hikers should be aware that some parts of the trail are exposed with loose rock underfoot.

    Approximate time and distances:
    7kms / 400m up / 650m down / 3 hours trekking
    5m / 1300ft up / 2200ft down / 3 hours trekking

  • Day 5:
Rifugio Averau - Rifugio Passo Staulanza

Leaving Rifugio Averau, the trail descends steeply before winding toward Passo Giau, one of the most scenic points on the Alta Via 1. From the pass, the route climbs again to Forcella Giau and crosses the wide Mondeval plateau. Continuing below Becco di Mezzodì, the path passes a series of saddles before descending to Rifugio Città di Fiume at the foot of Monte Pelmo.

From here, the trail leads through forest and across scree slopes beneath the towering walls of Pelmo before reaching Rifugio Passo Staulanza.

    Approximate time and distances:
    16km / 500m up / 1100m down / 5 hours trekking
    10m / 1600ft up / 3600ft down / 5 hours trekking

  • Day 6:
Rifugio Passo Staulanza - Rifugio Coldai

Departing from the cozy Rifugio Passo Staulanza, you'll embark on another day of scenic splendour as you make your way towards Rifugio Coldai.

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush meadows and forests. The path gradually gains elevation, revealing stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

As you continue your journey, you'll pass by the charming mountain village of Col di Rocca, providing an opportunity to glimpse into the local culture and history. The Dolomites' unique blend of natural beauty and human heritage is ever-present along the Alta Via 1.

Approaching Rifugio Coldai, you'll be greeted by awe-inspiring views of the crystalline waters of Lago Coldai, a picturesque alpine lake nestled beneath towering cliffs. Rifugio Coldai is perched above the lake, offering a welcoming retreat for trekkers. Here, you can unwind, enjoy a hearty meal, and savor the serenity of the surroundings.

    Approximate time and distances:
    6km / 500m up / 200m down / 3 hours trekking
    4m / 1800ft up / 700ft down / 3 hours trekking

  • Day 7:
    Rifugio Coldai - Rifugio Vazzoler

From Rifugio Sonino al Coldai, the trail continues over the nearby pass and descends to the turquoise waters of Lago Coldai.

Beyond the lake, the route follows rocky terrain across undulating ground toward Forcella di Col Reàn. Hikers should keep to the lower main path here, as the faint track below the wall is prone to rockfall. The trail continues across open ground to Sella di Pelsa before descending through forest to reach Rifugio Vazzoler.

    Approximate time and distances:
    10km / 300m up / 700m down / 3 hours trekking
    6m / 1000ft up / 2200ft down / 3 hours trekking

  • Day 8:
    Rifugio Vazzoler - Rifugio Carestiato

From Rifugio Vazzoler, the trail follows the main 4x4 track, descending to trail junction. From here, the route climbs to Forcella dell’Orso over exposed but manageable terrain, then continues across to Forcella del Camp. The path runs below the walls of Moiazza, leading steadily to Rifugio Carestiato. Please note: some sections of this stage are exposed, so hikers should take care with their footing.

    Approximate time and distances:
    9km / 700m up / 6500m down / 3 hours trekking
    6m / 2300ft up / 2100ft down / 3 hours trekking

  • Day 9:
    Rifugio Carestiato - Rifugio Pramperet

From Rifugio Carestiato, the route descends along a broad 4x4 track toward Passo Duran. From the pass, the trail follows the main road briefly before turning into the forest for a steady climb up to Forcella Dagarei. The path then continues along gentle contours, passing Malga Moschesin and crossing Forcella Moschesin, before arriving Rifugio Sommariva al Pramperet, nestled at the edge of the valley.

    Approximate time and distances:
    13km / 600m up / 600m down / 4 hours trekking
    8m / 2000ft up / 2000ft down / 4 hours trekking

  • Day 10:
Rifugio Pramperet - Rifugio Pian de Fontana

From Rifugio Pramperet, the trail rises steeply and becomes more exposed as it climbs to Forcella de Zita Nord and Sud, including a short scramble near the top. The route then descends to Rifugio Pian de Fontana, situated below the surrounding rock faces.

Some parts of this stage cross exposed terrain; care and attention are recommended, especially in poor weather.

    Approximate time and distances:
    6km / 500m up / 700m down / 3 hours trekking
    4m / 1600ft up / 2300ft down / 3 hours trekking

  • Day 11:
Rifugio Pain de Fontana - La Pissa bus stop

From Rifugio Pian de Fontana, the trail climbs to Forcella la Varéta, offering views across the surrounding valleys. The path then descends steeply toward Rifugio Bianchet, passing a few exposed sections that require careful footing.

Leaving Rifugio Bianchet, a broad 4x4 track leads down to the main road. From there, the nearby bus stop at La Pissa provides connections to Cortina d’Ampezzo and Belluno, just a short walk from the trail.

    Approximate time and distances:
    12km / 300m up / 1400m down / 4 hours trekking
    7m / 1000ft up / 4500ft down / 4 hours trekking

Most refuges have showers, but not all of them. Some of the most basic and remote ones do not have shower facilities, or only have cold showers. Some of the showers, when available, work with a token that needs to be purchased directly from the hut. This gives you access to a limited amount of water (normally close to a 3 minutes shower), in order not to waste it.

Water in the high mountains is scarse and a shower is very much a luxury. Most huts use water that has been collected over winter or that comes from a spring. If the previous winter has been particularly dry then the water reserves might be limited and run out in the middle of the summer, or a spring could go dry. If this happens, then, the hut guardians might be forced to stop the use of showers even in those huts that have shower facilities. In this case the limited water available will be used for the toilets and kitchen, which are definitely more needed services than showers.

The Dolomites are full of scree slopes and boulder fields, so it’s not unusual to find these along the way. Yes, you will always be able to charge your phone and electronic devices. Sometimes there won’t be charging points in your room, but there will be some in the common room or in the toilets. There might not be many of these, so you will need to take turns at charging your electronics. Some hikers prefer to take a small external power bank with them to charge their stuff. This could be a good idea, but I won’t recommend to take one that’s too big and heavy. A small one that could charge your phone once or twice would be enough, even though is not strictly necessary.

The area around Cortina d’Ampezzo and Passo Falzarego is where the old border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire used to be. Lots of battles were fought here during WWI, and both parties were using the mountains at their advantage to protect the front line. In the area of Cinque Torri/Passo Falzarego/Passo Valparola are still visible some of the trenches and tunnels built by the soldiers from both sides during the war, and some of these can be visited by tourists and hikers.

The main tunnel network was dug into the Lagazuoi mountains, just below Rifugio Lagazuoi. If spending the night there, it is possible to descend to passo Falzarego through the tunnels the next morning, before continuing on the AV1. The tunnels, however, are graded as a via ferrata, which means that you will need to have the right equipment (harness, helmet, via ferrata lanyards and a headtorch) in order to go through them safely.

Outside of this time it will be difficult to find accommodation. Some huts have a winter room that hikers can use but this is just an empty unmanned shelter with beds and sometimes a log burner. Outside of the huts’ opening season, as well, there could be snow on the ground making the trek more difficult and potentially dangerous if not equipped in the right way and with the right knowledge about the winter mountain environment.
