LA VANOISE NATIONAL PARK / 5 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS

The Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise — A Hidden Gem of the French Alps

Embark on a six-day adventure through the heart of France’s oldest national park, where every path tells the story of the Alps’ wild beauty. The Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise loops around the striking Vanoise range, offering an ever-changing backdrop of jagged peaks, sparkling glaciers, and peaceful alpine valleys. Each day brings something different — a new horizon, a new refuge, a new reminder of why this region remains one of the Alps’ best-kept secrets. This circular route is ideal for those with limited time who want a complete alpine trekking experience.

You’ll wander through flower-filled meadows, trace the edges of ancient glaciers, and climb mountain passes that open up to sweeping views across the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys. Unlike the busier trails of the Tour du Mont Blanc, the Vanoise offers quiet paths where you can still feel the solitude of the high mountains and spot wildlife like ibex, marmots, and bearded vultures in their natural habitat.

The Vanoise trek also carries a deeper story. Once home to over a hundred glaciers, the massif still boasts around 40 to 50 named ice formations today — among them the Glacier de la Vanoise, de Gébroulaz, de Chavière, and de la Grande Casse. While many are retreating, their presence remains powerful, carving dramatic landscapes and feeding alpine streams that bring life to the valleys below.

Each night, you’ll rest in mountain refuges that define the spirit of this region — some perched on rocky ridges with views of glaciers, others tucked among forests or pastures. Expect hearty Savoyard meals, shared stories with fellow trekkers, and that special mountain quiet that settles in as the sun sets over the peaks.

For those seeking a true taste of the Alps — away from the crowds but rich in scenery, culture, and challenge — the Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise delivers an unforgettable loop through one of France’s most timeless mountain landscapes.

YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise trek is well suited to fit hillwalkers, capable of trekking for multiple days carrying a reasonably heavy backpack. You follow footpaths each day and the terrain is very hilly. You can expect to do up to and over 700m ascent and descent per day.

Discover a lesser-known but equally stunning alternative to the Tour du Mont Blanc. This route offers a mix of landscapes that change at every turn — from alpine meadows and glaciers to rugged mountain passes. You’ll hike through France’s oldest national park, alive with diverse wildlife and plant life, and get the sense of truly circling the glaciers of the Vanoise range — though many are sadly shrinking fast. It’s a shorter trek than some of the classics, but still a full, rewarding loop around a mountain range — there’s something special about finishing where you began.

Ideal for hikers short on time, especially those traveling from within Europe, and a great first multi-day trek for anyone wanting to experience the Alps without the steep climbs or long days of the Tour du Mont Blanc or Haute Route.

You’ll stay in a series of welcoming mountain refuges that perfectly capture the spirit of the Vanoise. Each has its own charm — from alpine refuges surrounded by glaciers and rugged peaks to cozy huts nestled among meadows and larch forests. Comfort levels vary, but all provide warm hospitality, hearty meals and stunning views.

Adventure Itinerary

Here you'll find the full itinerary including distances (KM) ascents and descents each day and a rough estimate of how long it will take.

Start & End point: Pralognan-la-Vanoise

Length: 6 days

Whilst we aim to stick to the itinerary below, accommodation in some of the locations may not always be available. In this instance you will be booked into a suitable alternative accommodation.

Keep in mind: The moving times shown don’t account for breaks. Add 1–2 hours each day for a more accurate total trail time.

  • Day 1:
Pralognan-la-Vanoise - Refuge du Col de la Vanoise

The trek begins in Pralognan-la-Vanoise, a charming alpine village. From here, the trail climbs steadily towards the Col de la Vanoise, following a route that’s steep from the outset as it winds up ski pistes and mountain paths through forests and open pastures. The sound of cowbells and rushing meltwater accompanies you for much of the way.

After about an hour, you’ll reach the Refuge des Barmettes, a small refuge with a restaurant - a perfect place to pause for coffee or a snack before continuing higher. You now enter the National Park, the path traces the river, where marmots are often seen sunning themselves on rocks, and leads to the beautiful Lac des Vaches, famous for its stepping-stone path across the lake and reflections of the surrounding peaks.

As you continue, you’ll catch sight of your first glacier before arriving at the Refuge du Col de la Vanoise. Perched at the foot of the Grande Casse, the highest peak in the Vanoise, at 3855m. This is a welcoming refuge with hot showers, hearty meals, a large terrace, and spectacular sunset views!

    8km / 1100m up / 0m down / 4 hours

  • Day 2:
Refuge du Col de la Vanoise - Refuge d’Arpont

A fantastic start to the day, with gentle trails winding around the mountain range after the steep climb of the first day. The path undulates along the slopes, passing by small lakes and streams, with wide views across the Vanoise peaks. The only slightly technical section of the entire trek is the short boulder field crossing, which requires a bit of attention but is easily managed.

This day feels the most remote, deep in the heart of the national park, surrounded by nature. You’ll spot several glaciers along the way, including the largest in the Vanoise, as well as many beautiful lakes and waterfalls.

The day finishes at the Refuge de l’Arpont, simple but full of charm. The showers are basic, but the beds are comfy, the common room looks straight out onto the mountains, and the rooftop terrace is unbeatable for relaxing and soaking up the views after a big day.

    14km / 350m up / 600m down / 5-6 hours

  • Day 3:
    Refuge d’Arpont - Plan d’Amont

The trail from Refuge de l’Arpont begins by passing a spectacular waterfall. It’s a day of great variety - the landscape shifts from rugged alpine slopes and rocky paths to soft grassy pastures and gentle valleys.

As you approach the end of the stage, there are several refuges and alpine restaurants that offer the perfect excuse to stop and enjoy a delicious tart or a coffee on a sunny terrace. This section feels more lively and accessible compared to the quieter, wilder stages earlier in the trek.

You’ll finish the day at Plan d’Amont, a beautiful mountain area surrounded by wildflowers and overlooking a chain of sparkling alpine lakes. It’s a peaceful and quaint spot to spend the night, full of character, with a warm, friendly hosts and unforgettable views from the terrace.

    16km / 750m up / 700m down / 6-7 hours

  • Day 4:
    Plan d’Amont - Refuge de l’Orgère

You begin the day by crossing the dams, followed by a short but steep ascent that quickly brings you onto the higher alpine plateaus. From there, the trail traverses the mountains, winding through pastures. The path gradually descends towards the Refuge de l’Orgère.

The refuge itself is a highlight - the food is delicious, and you can enjoy a rich hot chocolate after the day’s walk. Breakfast is especially memorable, with a huge selection of homemade jams - the pear jam is not to be missed! The charming, relaxed atmosphere makes it a perfect stop.

    12km / 450m up / 800m down / 5 hours

  • Day 5:
Refuge de l’Orgère - Refuge du Roc de la Pêche

This is a beautiful and varied day of hiking, starting with the ascent to the Col de Chavière, the highest point of the trek (2796m), where, on a clear day, you will have views of Mont Blanc. Shortly afterward, you’ll pass through the famous “sea of cairns” - be sure to add one of your own as you go!

A short detour takes you past the Refuge de Peclet Polset, a convenient spot for a quick break or snack. As you continue, the scenery transforms dramatically - the valley opens up, the landscape turns lush and green, and for a moment it almost feels like Scotland. Passing a local cheese farm is a charming reminder that you are very much in the French Alps.

The trail then follows a 4x4 track leading to the Refuge du Roc de la Pêche, a luxurious mountain refuge. This standout chalet offers modern comforts including a games room, two saunas, a cinema room, an outdoor jacuzzi, and beautiful wood carvings throughout the building. It’s the perfect place to enjoy your final night.

    14km / 850m up / 900m down / 6-7 hours

  • Day 6:
Refuge du Roc de la Pêche - Pralognan-la-Vanoise

The final day is a short and all downhill walk, offering a gentle end to your trek. You’ll follow the river as it winds through the valley, passing small mountain hamlets along the way, where you can stop off for a refreshment break.

The last few hundred meters lead you back to Pralognan-la-Vanoise, completing the full loop and bringing you full circle to where your adventure began - a satisfying and scenic conclusion to the Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise.
