Who is This TMB Trek For?

This Tour du Mont Blanc guided hike is for fit female hillwalkers capable of trekking for 11 days in a row carrying a light (5-8kg) rucksack. We follow footpaths each day and the terrain is hilly and sometimes uneven. We stay in a mixture of mountain refuges, hotels, and auberges during the trek, which all provide basic but comfortable lodging and good food. This helps keep our packs light as we only need to carry snacks, clothing, and essentials.

Luggage transfers are included on this trip wherever road access allows. Your main bag will be transferred between eligible accommodation stops, allowing you to walk with just your daypack. Please note that some mountain huts and remote accommodations cannot be reached by vehicle, so luggage transfers are not available for these sections of the trek.

This trip is open to women only, and your guide will also be female. You must be 16 or over to take part in this trip - if you are younger than 18 you must be accompanied by an adult. If you have a group with children younger than 16, we can put together a bespoke private trip for you. Please get in touch to learn how.

Brilliant experience from start to finish.

Adventure Base handled the coordination, accommodations, meals, transfers, and execution of the guided trek exceptionally well. A special thank you to our guide, Rosella C., who added real value throughout the journey and dealt with any issues quickly and professionally. Tristan at Adventure Base was excellent with all of the pre-trip planning and logistics, and kudos as well to Madi for reaching out after the trip to gather feedback. Adventure Base took away much of the administrative work and worry, allowing me to simply enjoy the experience. The entire trip felt seamless and extremely well organized. The Dolomites certainly did not disappoint, and sharing the journey with a great group of fellow trekkers made it even better. Highly recommend Adventure Base.

4 Incredible Trips with Adventure Base

I've done four trips with these guys and its been incredible, I've climbed Mont Blanc, Hiked the Tour Du Mont Blanc, did four days on the Alta Via 1 and climbed Toubkal in North Africa - all with Adventure Base. Charlie and the team are professional, courteous and just overall great people to book trips through. Theres never been an issue Adventure Base can't fix, they make you feel like there are no silly questions and they've always done everything they can to ensure I've had a great trip. And I always have - every trip I've been on has been incredible, I regularly recommend them to friends, colleagues and family. If I could give them more then five stars I would.

We didn't want to stop walking!

Haute Route with Adventure Base - we didn't want to stop walking! Iconic trek made special by Adventure Base with lots of trusted support, excellent accommodation and thoughtful additions. Would recommend to anyone who wants to challenge themselves slightly up from the TMB. The clever mapping app showed profiles of each day to help us prep and we felt guided and safe even though we walked alone. Thoroughly enjoyed stays in both refuges and spa hotels to relax! Met lots of people on and off along the route which was very easy to follow. We were lucky with stunning weather but the SUCH varied scenery of each section was breath-taking. If you want to feel guided with help prepping, questions answered and someone always on hand if you need it, trust Adventure Base!

Incredible Experience!

Just got back from the self-guided Bernese Oberland Traverse in Switzerland and we were blown away! My wife and I have lots of prior hiking experience, but having the logistics of where we were staying and the route mapped out for us saved us a lot of time before the trip! The app they send you with your trip details and the route for every day is easy to navigate, has great offline capabilities, and has everything you need for each day of your trek (including any side adventures). For anything we needed, the team was easily accessible by phone or WhatsApp. All of the accommodations they chose were a 10 out of 10. We made so many memories on this trip without all the headache of managing your own logistics and its all thanks to the great team at Adventure Base!

They exceeded my expectations!

The 11-day TMB experience was perfect. Our guide, Rob, was incredibly attentive from the very first minute. He was meticulous about every detail and every participant, highly attuned to the group's needs, and possessed a great sense of humor and deep knowledge of the terrain. He ensured an excellent experience. All logistics, mountain huts, and hotels were perfect; I wouldn't change a thing. They exceeded my expectations, and we were even blessed with perfect weather. I couldn't have made a better choice for my TMB trip.

MOUNTAIN ACCOMMODATION

Your 'mountain accommodation' is always the most memorable. The mountain huts you stay in are remote and in beautiful locations. This is normally on night 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 11. Mountain huts in the Alps are unique in the fact they are fully catered by 'guardians' who manage the huts throughout the summer. They cook delicious 3 course meals for the guests and provide simple bedding arrangements, mostly in shared dormitories.

While we try our best to stick to the tried and tested itinerary below, the mountains and the weather sometimes have other ideas. We always remain as flexible as possible, which is why we only work with experienced and knowledgeable guides. This means we can make unforeseen changes to plans if required.

Frequently asked questions about this adventure

Guided TMB: What is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a popular long-distance trek that circles the Mont Blanc massif, passing through France, Italy and Switzerland. It’s roughly 170km with 10,000m of ascent. Our guided trek takes 11 days, while the record time is an astonishing 19 hours, 37 minutes and 43 seconds!

Guided TMB: What is the difficulty level of the Tour du Mont Blanc trek?

The Tour du Mont Blanc trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek, with a variety of terrains and altitude changes, and requiring a good level of fitness and experience in long-distance trekking. The main thing people aren’t prepared for is the elevation, it’s worth pre-trip trying to get in as much training with elevation gain and descent before your trek!

Guided TMB: Do I need to have previous experience?

You don’t need any previous trekking experience but it is worth having some hill-walking experience behind you. This will help prepare you for the amount of walking you’ll be doing on this trek. You must be able to walk comfortably on mixed ground (plenty of ascent and descent) for long periods of time, wearing a backpack.

Guided TMB: What is the role of the guide?

Your guide is responsible for:

  • Navigating the route
  • Ensuring safety on the trail
  • Offering support and encouragement
  • Providing information about local geography, history, and culture
  • Handling any emergencies that arise

Guided TMB: Do I need to train beforehand?

It’s recommended to come well prepared, even if you’re moderately active. You should build endurance, strength, and stamina through walking, hiking, or cardio exercises in preparation.

Guided TMB: What are the mountain huts like?

They are fairly basic but comfortable. You will sleep in dormitories on a shared basis, sometimes up to 6-8 per room (private rooms can be requested but availability is limited). The lodges offer breakfast and dinner (half board – included in your package), as well as options for buying snacks and a packed lunch for the following day. You can also stop for lunch at a refuge along your way.

Guided TMB: How do I get to the starting point of the Tour du Mont Blanc trek?

The starting point of the Tour du Mont Blanc trek varies depending on the route you book, but the most common starting points are Les Houches (France), Courmayeur (Italy), or Chamonix (France). The nearest major airport to the starting point is Geneva Airport, from which you can take a transfer, bus, or rental car to reach the starting point.

Guided TMB: What equipment and gear do I need for the Tour du Mont Blanc trek?

You can find a full kit list here. Best tip: don’t carry too much! You’ll always need less than you think. FYI – good trail shoes are fine for the TMB, big bulky hiking boots aren’t necessarily needed.

Guided TMB: What’s the weather like on the Tour du Mont Blanc trek?

On the whole you are likely to experience temperatures in the mid 20’s (Celsius) during July to September. However, in the mountains the weather can be quite unpredictable and there is always a chance that the temperature can drop very low (to freezing sometimes) or go as high as the early 30’s, so come prepared. By prepared, we mean having lots of layers and plenty of suncream, a hat, sunglasses etc.

Guided TMB: What happens if the weather is bad?

This depends on a few factors and how bad the weather is. Your guide and the group will come up with a plan of action for the day, whether that involves some shortcuts or skipping a stage depending on the severity.

Guided TMB: What insurance do I need?

Let’s face it, these types of trips don’t come risk free. We’re putting ourselves in amazing environments but also environments that carry an element of risk with them. In order to protect yourself adequately you will need a specialist travel insurance that caters for the types of activities you will be undertaking. It is a condition of our agreement that you are covered by adequate travel insurance for your arrangements. Click here to understand which one is for you.

Guided TMB: Will I have access to the internet and mobile signal during the Tour du Mont Blanc trek?

Access to internet and mobile signal during the Tour du Mont Blanc trek may be limited in remote areas. Most areas are pretty good for signal apart from Les Chapieux – which has a 14km radius of no service which is the major ‘dark spot’ of the trek. Refuge Bonhomme is most likely the last service point before the Col de la Seigne.

Guided TMB: What money do I need?

There are two types of currencies used while on the trip: Euros and the Swiss Franc, though most if not all Swiss refuges on the TMB will accept Euros
(€1=1CHF). You will need to carry some cash on the trip as not all businesses accept credit card. Along the route you will find ATM’s in Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Champex and Chamonix, but we recommend planning ahead. You can expect to spend anywhere from €15-€50 per day, depending on what you order.
