Walkers Haute Route: Start / Finish Point Directions

Getting to Chamonix, Arolla, and Zermatt

For the most part getting to the start of the Haute Route is quick and straight forward. However if you are joining half way through then we might need to work on how to get to your start destination.

Don’t worry, where ever you’re starting we will help you get there. Just get in touch for some advice.

 

Chamonix, France

Closest Airport: Geneva

In season transfers: June–September & December–April (out of these months transfers are less frequent)

Chamonix, the adventure capital of the world, is easily accessible via Geneva Airport, which offers regular flights from major cities. From Geneva, a transfer to Chamonix takes 1 hour 30 minutes.

  • Shared Transfers: Approximately €55 each way for a direct, door-to-door service with Mountain Drop-Offs. Book in advance here.
  • Bus Options: Check SwissTours or FlixBus for alternative transport.

If your trek starts further along the route, contact us for taxi, train, or bus recommendations.

Arolla, Switzerland

Closest airports: Geneva (best option) or Zurich

From Geneva Airport, take the Swiss train (SBB) to Sion, followed by the Swiss PostAuto 381 bus to Arolla.

  • Train & Bus duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
  • Cost: Approximately CHF 40 each way
  • Plan your journey here (From: Geneve Aeroport | To: Arolla).

For the return journey from Zermatt, take a train to Visp, then connect to Geneva.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Closest airports: Geneva or Zurich

From Geneva Airport, take the Swiss train to Zermatt.

  • Train Duration: Around 4 hours
  • Cost: Approximately CHF 50 each way
