The West Highland Way as a long-distance trail was conceived in the 1960s by Scottish businessman and hiker Tom Weir, who was inspired by similar trails in Europe and North America. Weir’s vision was to create a trail that would connect the industrial city of Glasgow to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands, offering both locals and visitors a chance to experience Scotland’s stunning natural beauty in a more accessible way.

In 1966, Scotland’s National Trust for Scotland (NTS) and other regional organisations began working on a plan to establish the West Highland Way as an official walking route. It was finally completed and officially opened in 1980, quickly becoming one of the most popular and iconic long-distance hiking trails in the UK.

This 4-day itinerary showcases some of Scotland's most spectacular trails and breathtaking views as you tackle the northern section of the West Highland Way from Crianlarich to Fort William. The daily distances and elevation changes strike a perfect balance—challenging enough to feel truly rewarding, yet manageable enough to keep you ready for the next day's adventure. By the time you reach Fort William, you'll have more than earned that well-deserved dram of local whisky each evening!

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The West Highland Way is suitable for a wide range of hikers, from experienced trekkers to those with moderate fitness levels who are up for a challenge. While it’s not a technically difficult trail, it does require a reasonable level of fitness and stamina due to the varied terrain, long daily walks, and some steep climbs. You will stay in comfortable hotels each night in private rooms, with your luggage delivered to you each day. This give you the ability to keep your packs nice and light for your days trekking.

  • Day 1:
    Crianlarich - Bridge of Orchy

    A shorter, scenic stage that follows old military roads through wide, open landscapes. The gentle walk leads to the peaceful hamlet of Bridge of Orchy, a perfect spot to recharge.

    19.2km / 407m up / 493m down 11.93 miles / 1,335 feet up / 1,617 feet down

  • Day 2:
    Bridge of Orchy - Kingshouse

    Ascend past Inveroran onto Rannoch Moor, a remote and breathtaking expanse of wilderness. This stage is one of the most dramatic, ending at the iconic Kingshouse Hotel with its resident deer.

    19.5km / 442m up / 372m down 12.12 miles / 1,450 feet up / 1,220 feet down

  • Day 3:
    Kingshouse - Kinlochleven

    Tackle the Devil’s Staircase, the trail's highest point, for panoramic views of Glencoe. Descend steeply into Kinlochleven, a village surrounded by towering peaks and a welcoming atmosphere.

    14km / 465m up / 697m down 8.70 miles / 1,526 feet up / 2,287 feet down

  • Day 4:
    Kinlochleven - Fort William

    The final stage begins with a climb out of Kinlochleven into the dramatic Lairigmor pass. Traverse through valleys and forests before arriving triumphantly in Fort William, where you can celebrate completing the West Highland Way.

    PS: Many of our clients choose to climb Ben Nevis the day after completing the trek. If this is part of your plans, let us know—we'd be happy to assist with arranging accommodation for your final night.

You may have heard that the Devil’s Staircase, located between Kingshouse and Kinlochleven, is the most challenging part of the trek. However, its reputation is more intimidating than the reality. While it is a short, steep climb that takes about 45 minutes, the reward at the top is well worth it—breathtaking views await. Another tricky section is the trail alongside Loch Lomond, where you’ll navigate roots and uneven terrain. This is arguably the most technical part of the route, so we recommend allowing yourself plenty of time to tackle it at a comfortable pace.
